A July randomized crossover study tested 16 recreational runners after normal sleep and after total sleep deprivation, meaning an entire night without sleep. The Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise study found a 13.2% reduction in time to exhaustion at the second lactate threshold, even though metabolic power was lower at the same speed. A separate March study exposed 13 young male recreational runners to 26 hours awake.

A February systematic review found non-linear, race-dependent relationships: longer wakefulness, poorer sleep quality, and greater in-race sleepiness tracked with worse outcomes, while pre-race sleep extension and naps during events may help. Future studies must test whether improving sleep actually reduces injuries rather than merely accompanying lower injury rates.
