What did Nike announce for racing?

Nike's April 2026 preview offers little technical detail. The company says athletes are testing approved development prototypes, but it identifies no new foam, plate design, or sole architecture in its racing innovation announcement. "World Athletics–approved" means the prototypes meet competition requirements.

It does not reveal how their soles work or prove that they improve performance. Until Nike publishes specifications, claims about a revolutionary new sole would be speculation. The announcement signals ongoing development, not a technology that runners can evaluate or purchase.

Project Amplify goes beyond the sole

Project Amplify is Nike's most substantial documented footwear project, but it is not simply a new sole. It augments ankle and lower-leg movement through a motor, drive belt, and rechargeable cuff battery. Those components connect to a carbon-fiber-plated running shoe. Nike says the shoe can also be worn without the robotic hardware, making the conventional footwear one part of a larger system. Nike is developing Amplify for everyday runners, joggers, and walkers rather than athletes chasing race-day seconds.

Its stated focus includes people running around 10- to 12-minute miles. In Nike's Project Amplify test report, the company says more than 400 testers covered over 2.4 million steps across at least nine hardware versions. Some testers reportedly ran a 10-minute-mile pace with the effort normally required for a 12-minute mile. That is a company finding, not an independent clinical result. Amplify remains in early testing, with consumer availability planned only for "the coming years.".

Which sole technologies can runners evaluate now?

Structure Plus is Nike's clearest recent sole-platform change for runners seeking stability. It is the brand's first stability shoe to combine soft ZoomX foam with firmer ReactX foam. Nike describes the dual-foam midsole as a balance of energy return, support, and motion control. The key advance is the pairing of foams with different roles, rather than a motor or an entirely new material. Nike's Structure Plus description explains that ZoomX supplies the softer ride while ReactX creates a more supportive base.

For racing, Vaporfly 4 refines an established formula instead of replacing it. It retains ZoomX foam and a carbon-fiber Flyplate, but changes the plate curvature and removes unnecessary midsole foam. Nike says this makes it about 10% lighter than Vaporfly 3 in the Vaporfly 4 announcement. Pegasus Premium takes another approach. Its sole layers a sculpted, visible, full-length Air Zoom unit with ZoomX foam and ReactX heel foam. Nike says this returns more energy than earlier Pegasus models, but that remains a manufacturer claim.

The relevant question is not which shoe sounds most advanced. It is which design addresses the runner's actual use.

None of Nike's stated energy-return or effort findings establishes injury prevention or guarantees a faster pace for every runner. Fit, comfort, intended distance, and the difference between company testing and independent evidence remain practical checks before choosing any model.
