Altra vs Hoka Running Shoe Sizing: Wide Toe Boxes Compared

Altra generally gives you a wider toe box than Hoka, while Hoka offers more structured wide widths in select models. The toe box is the front section that holds your toes. Fit still depends on the exact model and foot shape. The sections below show how each brand sizes width and how to choose.

How does Altra build toe room?

Altra Running US divides its roomy lasts into three FootShape fits. Original is roomiest, Standard sits in the middle, and Slim/Racing is narrowest. According to the FootShape fits guide from Altra Running US, two shoes in the same size can fit very differently.

Altra Australia says every shoe uses Balanced Cushioning, also called ZeroDrop. Heel and forefoot sit the same distance from the ground, unlike traditional trainers with about a 12mm offset. Licensed retailer Foveo Run shares Altra's sizing guidance to order running shoes one-half size larger than a dress shoe and measure in centimeters against its chart.

How does Hoka define wide?

Hoka defines wide sizing by industry widths. Men's standard is D and wide is 2E/EE, while women's standard is B and wide is D.

According to the Wide Fit guide from Hoka, wide models add about 3-5mm across the ball for toe splay. Hoka UK cautions standard-foot runners who want only extra toe room to pick a standard-width model with a wide toe box instead. The brand warns that a full wide fit can allow sliding, blisters, and instability.

Which feels wider on foot?

In direct trail-shoe comparison, Hoka's Speedgoat 6 offers only moderate room for splaying toes. Testers at SectionHiker call it nowhere as wide as the Altra Lone Peak, with an otherwise fairly narrow interior, in their Speedgoat 6 GTX review.

The same SectionHiker review notes a different ride. Speedgoat 6 uses a 5mm heel-to-toe drop, 40mm heel and 35mm forefoot, plus a forefoot rocker that propels the stride forward. Altra uses a flat 0mm platform for a more natural gait.

How should you pick your size?

Wide varies by model, not just brand. Testers in a March 2022 Road Trail Run multi-tester review found Altra's Mont Blanc dramatically roomier, while Hoka's Speedgoat 5 locks the midfoot with a protective bumper, as described in that multi-tester review from Road Trail Run.

Always try the exact model before you buy. Road Trail Run advises testing in running socks with a thumb's width ahead of the longest toe. Shop in the socks you run in and leave a thumb's width ahead of your longest toe.
