What does "reduced running effort" mean?

running effort can describe two different things: subjective strain and physiological workload. A 2022 Sports Medicine review uses rating of perceived exertion, or RPE, to measure the first—the runner's conscious judgment of difficulty. RPE does not necessarily track heart rate, speed, or metabolic demand perfectly.

Music may therefore change the experience of a run without reducing what the muscles and cardiovascular system must do. A 2020 Psychological Bulletin meta-analysis covering 139 studies and 3,599 participants found modest improvements in perceived exertion, physical performance, and positive feelings. The effect was strongest for feelings, while fast music produced better performance results than slow or medium-tempo music.

Can music actually make runners faster?

Sometimes—but feeling easier and performing better do not always occur together. In a randomized study of 20 healthy young men, preferred music increased the distance covered during a six-minute run by 10% and lowered post-run lactate by 9%. It did not significantly change RPE or heart rate. A separate treadmill study of 12 adults produced a similar pattern.

Fast-tempo music increased self-selected speed from 9.9 to 10.8 km/h and raised peak heart rate, yet peak RPE did not change significantly. The runners worked harder while reporting similar maximum strain. Music does not raise every meaningful performance marker. In another study of 20 physically active adults, preferred music did not change speed at the anaerobic threshold or the measurements taken at that threshold.

What might be happening in the brain?

Music can activate reward pathways. A Nature Neuroscience study from McGill University found endogenous dopamine release in the striatum during emotionally intense listening. Activity in the caudate related to anticipation, while the nucleus accumbens related to peak pleasure. That finding helps explain why a favorite track can feel motivating.

It does not prove that dopamine causes better running performance, because the research examined music reward rather than running. Attention may also matter. A 2025 cycling study found that synchronized music produced lower RPE, greater external focus, and altered prefrontal oxygenation. However, it involved only 27 healthy young adults and was not a running-performance trial, so the mechanism remains preliminary.

When is music less likely to help?

Music's effects depend on the runner and the task. Preferred songs can improve motivation without changing threshold performance, while fast music may encourage a runner to select a higher speed rather than conserve energy. Intensity may narrow the benefit.

A 2026 review found that effects involving mood and executive function remained inconclusive and were generally smaller during harder exercise. At high intensity, strong physical signals may leave less room for music to change the experience. Results from young, healthy adults also may not transfer neatly to older runners, beginners, or people with health conditions. Treat the reported averages as possibilities, not guaranteed improvements.

How to use music as a running aid

Use music as an optional mood and pacing tool, then judge its value from your own repeatable runs. Protect your hearing while testing playlists. The NIH's National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders warns that exposure at or above 85 dBA can damage hearing when it lasts long enough, so keep headphone volume controlled.
