The 1-mile walk fitness test (also known as the Rockport Walk Test) is a simple way to assess your cardiovascular fitness level. Walk 1 mile as fast as you can, then use your time and heart rate to estimate your VO2 max and overall aerobic fitness. No special equipment is needed beyond a stopwatch.
1-Mile Walk Test: Good Times by Age
Minutes — Male vs Female
How to Perform the 1-Mile Walk Test
- Find a flat, measured course: A track, marked path, or treadmill works best
- Warm up: Walk at an easy pace for 5 minutes
- Walk 1 mile as fast as possible: Maintain a pace you can sustain for the full mile
- Record your time: Note your finish time in minutes and seconds
- Check your heart rate: Immediately measure your pulse for 15 seconds and multiply by 4
Interpreting Your Results
A good 1-mile walk time for adults under 50 is 13-15 minutes. For adults over 50, 14-17 minutes is a solid result. Elite fitness walkers complete a mile in under 12 minutes. Your time combined with your heart rate at finish provides an estimate of your VO2 max and cardiovascular fitness level.
